Having never arranged a funeral before, I relied heavily on the reputation of Joseph Gawler's Sons and the guidance of their staff during one of the most difficult periods of my family's life. Overall, I would rate the experience an 8 out of 10.
The team successfully delivered on the most important objective: honoring my 91-year-old father with dignity. From the church service through his burial at Quantico National Cemetery, everything ran smoothly, on time, and without drama. Hunter and the staff were attentive, responsive, and professional throughout the process, particularly on the day of the services. Their willingness to accommodate special requests, including allowing a family friend to photograph my father prior to the funeral, was appreciated.
That said, there were aspects of the experience that left me disappointed. During the preparation of the death certificate information, the draft we received listed the wrong cemetery, indicated cremation rather than burial, and incorrectly identified my father's race. While these errors were corrected before anything was finalized, they were significant mistakes to receive while grieving the loss of a loved one. What concerned me most was not that mistakes occurred, but that there was never an acknowledgment or apology for them. For a firm that positions itself as a premier provider of white-glove service, I expected a higher level of attention to detail and communication surrounding such important information.
I also came away feeling that much of the value I was paying for was tied to the historic Gawler's reputation rather than the actual services utilized. Our arrangements were relatively straightforward, with services held off-site, a church service, burial at Quantico, and a traditional casket selection. While everything was handled professionally, the overall experience felt more standard than exceptional given the price point.
In the end, Gawler's accomplished what mattered most. My father was cared for respectfully, the funeral and burial were executed without complications, and our family was able to focus on honoring his life. For that, I am grateful. At the same time, I believe there is room for improvement in quality control, communication, and delivering the level of personalized service that many families expect when choosing a name with such a longstanding reputation.
For families considering Gawler's, I would describe the experience as professional, reliable, and well-executed, but not quite the white-glove experience I anticipated based on the firm's reputation and pricing. An 8 out of 10 feels fair: good people, a successful outcome, but opportunities remain to elevate the experience to match the premium brand they represent.

When my mother died Gawler’s was recommended to us by a friend. My brother recently passed away and we reached out to Gawler’s. They were kind, professional and exceedingly helpful. My brother will be placed in rest at the Arlington Military Cemetery. Gawler’s handled all of the details for us. We are very thankful for there service.

Our family is incredibly grateful for the care, compassion, and professionalism shown by Alex Agard and the staff at Gawler’s during such a difficult time for our family.
From the very beginning, Alex was warm, kind, and truly listened to us. He guided us with such sincerity that we always felt confident we were making the right choices to honor our beloved dad and husband. In moments when we needed it most, he brought lightness and warmth that made us smile—something we didn’t think was possible during such a heavy time.
The wake was absolutely beautiful—thoughtfully arranged, seamless, and deeply meaningful. Every detail reflected not only excellence, but genuine care. Alex went above and beyond in every possible way, and we will never forget the comfort and support he provided.
To Alex and the team at Gawler’s. Thank you for helping us celebrate a life so dearly loved with such dignity and grace. We are forever grateful. 💙 The Fettig and Ryan family

Gawler’s Funeral Home provided truly exceptional care for our family. They handled my mother’s recent service with the same professionalism, compassion, and attention to detail that they showed for my father’s more than a decade ago. Their team guided us through every step with sensitivity and calm, making an incredibly difficult time feel lighter and more manageable.
The service was beautifully arranged, thoughtful, and exactly what we hoped it would be. Everyone we interacted with was caring, patient, and genuinely committed to honoring our loved ones with dignity. It meant a great deal to us to feel so supported and understood.
Alexander Agard was our funeral director at Gawlers who we would recommend to any family.

J&G is not your traditional funeral home... It's better. My family was looking for something to capture my father's essence. J&G was the place!
Alexander Agard is the one who made this possible for us. He went above and beyond for us. He underpromised and overdelivered on everything! From the floral arrangements to the menu. We customized our menu to fit our cultural customs and even included kid-friendly items. Alexander curated a museum of my father's life by using his belongings and photos. Our family was floored by the exhibit. He was humble, calm, and reassuring throughout the entire process. I would highly recommend him and Joseph & Gawler's.
