Even without going inside, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is absolutely stunning. The exterior architecture alone is breathtaking—massive, detailed, and incredibly well-maintained. It’s one of those places that immediately stands out and makes you pause to take it all in. The grounds are peaceful and add to the overall experience. Definitely worth a visit, even just to admire it from the outside.

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is a treasure. Sometimes when something receives rave reviews, you expect too much and are underwhelmed. This is certainly not true of the Basilica. The architecture, mosaics, statues, etc. are breathtaking. This has been on our bucket list for a while and we are so happy we were able to visit. We attended the Solemn Mass at noon. It was very moving. We live about three hours away but plan to visit a few times each year for Mass. The priest was great. We saw him in the cafeteria after Mass and asked if he would bless a few items after he ate. He immediately said, "Let's do it right now." and then chatted with us for a few minutes. The Basilica is something you don't want to miss.

Go underneath and walk through the Crypt Church. The atmosphere down there is quieter, older in spirit, almost monastic. It feels like the deep foundation of the entire place—stone, silence, and prayer holding up the beauty above. Mass here is something else entirely. Reverent, powerful, and wrapped in the kind of space that makes every note and word feel bigger than you expected. They even have two excellent gift shops and a cafeteria if you’re spending time exploring the grounds, which you should. Stunning all around. A place where architecture, faith, and quiet reflection collide in the best possible way. If you’re in Washington, this is not optional—go see it.

Many people confuse this edifice with the National Cathedral, which is Episcopalian, and St. Matthew’s Cathedral. But this is an amazingly impressive edifice in its own right; indeed, it certainly more dramatic than St. Matthew’s. There are many side chapels dedicated to the Virgin Mary throughout the nave. There’s also a magnificent crypt. I’ve been coming to this church, most of my life from time to time and always walk away spiritually fulfilled.
