As a practicing Catholic for over 50 years, I’m well familiar with the significance of Lent — the symbolism of dust, fasting, abstinence, the brevity of life, atonement, etc. The 40-day season (46 if you count Sundays) begins with Ash Wednesday, which is what brought me to this church for the first time. I happened to be in DC and this was the closest R.C. church to my flat. But this was also the first time I heard the word “mortification” used in the context of Lent, during Fr. Charles Gallagher’s homily. I had always assumed it simply meant feeling embarrassed. In fact, mortification, I’ve learned, refers to the small sacrifices and voluntary denials of pleasure — such as enduring hunger while fasting — that we Catholics undertake in the spirit of the season.

A beautiful Mass reverently celebrated in Latin with great devotion from both the priest and the faithful. I have to admit, I was truly surprised by the large number of young adults attending a Thursday evening Mass at 6:30 p.m., followed by Eucharistic Adoration. After Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, I had the chance to speak with some of them, and I really enjoyed the experience. I felt warmly welcomed as a brother in the faith. Don’t miss visiting this hidden gem in the heart of D.C.

While visiting Washington DC, we visited this beautiful cathedral. Impressive paintings on ceilings, and decorative portraits of different Virgin/saints were most impressive. The pipe organ is unlike anything we had experienced at a larger scale, and the sound was a unique resounding experience to last a lifetime. We went as tourists to see the cathedral, but we arrived there by coincidence for the mass at 5 o’clock.
Below the cathedral level, there are three floors down of sections to pray/kneel/ candles in remembrance, Grotto type areas for reflection and quiet prayer; there is a gift shop with beautiful things. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity must see! Largest Cathedral-Catholic in the nation. This place is for all race, religions to see this magnificent cathedral. The area is fantastic.
