I think that Independence Court of Hyattsville is a decent assisted living facility. The food is almost always pretty good. The staff are decent, nice and helpful. They all try their best. They get an "A" for effort, and high marks for performance.
The other night I slipped on the way to the toilet. I do not recall the fall in the dark, but I woke up after hitting the back of my head on the floor so hard that I was lying in a small, shallow pool of my own blood around my head, with a pain from a medium level concussion in the back of my head.
I called the front desk, and the staff member responded within a few minutes, and he immediately called 911. He did an acceptable job and responded in a quick, efficient manner to get the immediate, emergency help I required.
I was taken to Adventist. I stayed there over night while I waited for the doctor to analyze the CT scan. It turned out negative for any

I recently had the opportunity to volunteer at Independence Court of Hyattsville, and it was an amazing experience. Ms. Lauren, the Life Enrichment Director, was incredibly kind, welcoming, and funny, and I’m so grateful she allowed me to volunteer. The reception staff, especially Ms. Sharon, were also very warm and helpful.
I enjoyed feeding the wonderful residents, decorating, listening to music, singing and crafting. The experience brought me so much joy, and I’m truly grateful for the opportunity. I highly recommend Independence Court of Hyattsville to anyone considering volunteering, it’s a wonderful place with even more wonderful people.

Whether a person of faith or agnostic, most have heard the saying, “When a door closes, God opens a window.” For my husband, that window was Marla von Stein, Executive Director of Independence Court of Hyattsville, and her caring and efficient staff.
After COVID left my husband hospitalized without the ability to stand, I—isolated at home with COVID—was forced to choose a rehabilitation center, sight unseen. The facility was a huge disappointment, and my husband was very unhappy there. Once I recovered, I got busy looking for another place for him. The tour of the second facility left us hopeful, but the lack of response from its staff and repeated cancellations of transfer dates without bothering to inform us left us angry and frustrated. However, a chance conversation with a friend who knows Marla changed everything. He put me in touched with her, we had a pleasant, informative conversation, and she invited me to Independence Court for a tour.
When I arrived, staff at the front desk greeted me warmly. A staff member escorted me into a meeting room, where Marla, Nita Soo (Director of Marketing), and I discussed my husband’s case. They satisfied all of our questions, and even spoke with him on the phone. The conversation was very friendly, and we even shared personal photos. When we learned that I could transfer him the next day, my husband and I decided that Independence Court was the right place.
Although the facility could use a facelift, it is clean and comfortable. But the real standout is the care and warmth of the staff. My husband was particularly impressed with nursing assistants Gloria, Rosie, and Milli. And he has high praise for physical therapist Pioh and occupational therapist Amy. Now that he’s home, I’m challenged to match the meals in the Dining Room and Roberta’s great service. All of these wonderful people contributed to my husband’s recovery and renewed physical strength. I cannot recommend Independence Court highly enough!

My mom has been a resident of Independence Court of Hyattsville since Feb 2023. Words cannot express how grateful I am for the care she has received here. It's not the fanciest facility in the world but don't let that sway you. It's tidy, clean, calm ... and most importantly the staff is second to none! Many staff have been here for multiple years and decades .. this is saying a lot. Mom has gone through various phases during her tenure there and Independence Court has guided me and rolled through the punches with me. So many lovely kind people work here ... from Sharon at the front desk to Lauren the Activities Director et al. I feel fortunate to have found this gem!

. When looking for a place for your loved one in their later years, Independence Court is an amazing community for senior living. They provide a variety of services adapted to the specific needs of each resident. For advanced dementia residents, they have a wonderful memory care section. They have their own Life Enrichment Director who keeps everyone busy and happy to be there. Medical care is available 24/7 from licensed RN’s and LPN’s. There is plenty of parking available for visitors. Other features include a beauty shop and barber shop for the residents. Internet access is available. The meals are adjusted to meet any dietary needs. They are also very close to Metro for those who prefer public transportation. Independence Court is a hidden gem that must be considered when you look for a community for your elderly family member. You will be happy that you did.
