Recently, I had to find an Assisted Living Facility (ALF) with Memory Care for my sister due to significant dementia. After a rushed search in the St. Petersburg area, we chose a place that quickly proved inadequate. They started memory care less than a year ago and are clearly suffering from poor planning, poor management, and poor-quality staff. Keep in mind that there is nothing exceptional or extraordinary for someone in my sister’s condition and it was clearly a lack of ability by the facility. The point here is that you need to be very careful in rooting out the good from the bad and price is not always a differentiator. Carefully assess the engagement of the staff, the activities, and the managers. If you do not see a lot of activity and engagement, if it feels sad and depressing you should walk away. My concierge, Sherryl Cabildo, has been a godsend. She helped me choose the long-term care facility where I placed my husband, touring each place with me. She followed up regularly to see how he was doing and how I was doing. She let me know when she was going to be away and gave me the name of a coworker who would be covering for her. She was there for me during the Christmas holidays when my husband had a health crisis and I needed to arrange transport for him. I am so fortunate to have found such a caring, compassionate concierge to guide me through such emotionally difficult times.

What was so impressive was the quickness in which she returned calls and provided information. I couldn’t believe this service was at no cost to our family especially with all the time she devoted to us. Even after my mother was placed, she reached out with compassion and genuine interest to follow up on her adjustment and medical issues.
