D.C. War Memorial

This seems tucked away in a corner and overshadowed by all the other great monuments around here, but its one of the older monumments and well aorty the quick detour.

The DC War Memorial was built in 1931 to honor the 26,000 residents of Washington DC who served during World War I. This circular, dome shaped, white marble structure features 499 names to honor those who died during the war.

Visiting the District of Columbia War Memorial with my wife and son for the first time was a surprisingly meaningful experience for our family. At first, like many others, I assumed it was the national World War I memorial. But as we read more about it, we learned that it specifically honors the men and women from Washington, D.C. who served or supported the Great War effort. That detail made the visit feel even more personal and intimate. Built in 1932 during the Great Depression, the memorial has a simple yet elegant Romanesque design. Standing there, surrounded by the engraved names of those who contributed or sacrificed their lives, brought a quiet sense of respect and reflection. My son asked thoughtful questions about why wars happen and why memorials are built, which turned the visit into a heartfelt history lesson for him. Moments like that remind me why traveling together as a family is so important. We also learned about the National World War I Memorial, located east of the White House, which opened in 2021 as the national tribute. Knowing the distinction between the two gave us a deeper appreciation of the history around us. Walking through the peaceful surroundings, with my wife by my side and my son curiously exploring, made this visit special. It wasn’t just about seeing another monument — it was about understanding the stories behind it and sharing that knowledge together as a family.

I do photography and videography locally and the DC War Memorial is one of my go-to spots for portraits and surprise proposals. There are rarely crowds and the 24/7 lights are perfect for late evening portraits. I've also been hired for photo and video of weddings here and it's perfect for small ceremonies.
