The Taft memorial is being restored, so it's closed up close. Still visitable, though. My teens thought it hilarious to sing Family Guy's 70s funk song about Taft 😂 It's a pretty forested park. Nice and cool in summer.

A peaceful and somewhat underrated spot near the National Zoo. The Taft Memorial Carillon is a beautiful monument with impressive bells that ring on the hour, creating a calming atmosphere. It’s a great place for a quiet moment, and the surrounding park area makes it even more pleasant to visit. Not as crowded as some other spots in DC, so it’s a nice retreat if you’re looking for a little solitude.

This memorial features a tower surrounded by plenty of seating and some carved statements of one of the giants of the US Senate. With plenty of seating, this quiet location provides a breath of fresh air in the shadow of power and a brief respite from the crowds.

The Taft Memorial is one of DC's lesser known memorials and I wouldn't make a special trip there. However, if you are walking nearby, it's another a memorial to see. It's just off to the side of the US Capitol Building and is a tall monument with a statue of the former president at the bottom surrounding by a moat with several inspiring quotes from his presidency. That's it. Again, it's worth a visit if you are nearby, but don't add it to your itinerary.

As I've stated elsewhere, the whole Capitol Hill area is a distinct entity full of little places to pause at and ponder. One such is the Robert Taft Memorial. It's right on the main road - next to the New Jersey Ave. Just look to your right and left. It's the big structure. It celebrates Taft for being the great jurist that he was. It does so through an absolutely fantastic bronze statue and a huge limestone town. MOST INTERESTINGLY, the tower has several huge bells on top. The little details people miss. Take your kids here and ask them to explore the little park and learn a little bit about Robert Taft. While there, ask them to think about why they have the big bells up on the tower!
