This is an amazing marker which is easily missed and not appreciated. The names are the foundation of DC history.

This monument is dedicated to the original European settlers in DC. The monument has the names of each patentee (those who received a land grant), and the year that grant was provided. The monument was placed by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Colonists in 1936, as a way of teaching history. Each side of the monument features a symbol of the early agriculture pursuits - tobacco plant, wild turkey, stalk of corn, and a fish.
