I have had nothing but a fantastic experience with DC VA Counseling over the last two years. From my first ever therapist, Annie, our couples counselor, Michael, to my current individual therapist, Katelyn, they have all been wonderful. In this review, I want to highlight my experience with Katelyn. I absolutely love working with her and look forward to our sessions every single week. She’s helped me through some particularly difficult experiences over the past year and has helped me learn to have greater self-compassion towards myself. She’s also helped me be okay with feeling and fully experiencing more difficult or negative emotions or thoughts, and to break down guilt/shame spirals I typically fall into. Perhaps most importantly, she has been a great person to share my passion and love for singing with, and takes the time to listen to videos of me singing that I make. It feels great having someone who truly cares about what matters to me most. Needless to say, Katelyn is a fantastic therapist, and I would refer anyone to her in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately, I feel as though this is a dishonest practice. I had no issue with the provider but the admin/billing aspect was extremely disappointing. I was told that my sessions were going to be $10 each (I have this in writing) to which I had five sessions total. I had to pause my sessions due to just being too busy to find time in my schedule. I was considering resuming but will not be doing so. I come to find 5 seperate charges on my bank statement of $24.69. I inquired about them, only to be told that the following: "Insurance decided to change it. You can call the number on the back of your card. Insurance usually do whatever they want... it is irritating for sure. But yeah the best way is to call them so they can tell you why they increase it. We only get the number unfortunately." I have never heard of such a thing happen at any practice. Anytime insurance "changes" the cost of your sessions, the practice should notify the patient right away. Not only should you notify the patient, but since when do you retroactively charge them? I didn't even get a bill so that I could formally call my insurance to inquire. I responded to the email and of course they stopped responding. Do not recommend this place due to these issues.

I’ve been seeing Jillian for help with my anxiety and depression, and it’s made such a big difference. I felt comfortable from day one. She really got what I was going through. What helped me the most was their ability to break things down in a way that actually made sense. They gave me practical tools I could use right away, while also helping me understand the deeper patterns behind my anxiety. I feel calmer, more confident, and more like myself again.
Highly recommend her if you’re looking for someone who’s real, caring, and actually helpful.

I have had such a positive experience with DCVA Counseling. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, and my therapist made it extremely easy for me to open up at my own speed. Every session felt thought through, while being supportive, however also focused on tools I could really use in my everyday life. I never felt rushed, and they always checked in to make sure I was comfortable with the direction we were going in. I’ve noticed a real difference in my stress levels and overall mindset since starting here. Definitely recommend it if you're looking for compassionate, and reliable care.

My experience with Theresa Mulieri began with sincere hope and commitment to improving my marriage through structure, accountability, and faith-centered guidance. Unfortunately, her process fell short of her own professional and ethical standards, leaving me feeling unsupported and further from the healing I sought.
From the beginning, my goals were clear--balanced communication, mutual accountability, and a structured path toward growth rooted in God's principles. Over time, however, sessions became increasingly unstructured, reactive, and emotionally one-sided. Rather than progressing through a clear plan, discussions focused narrowly on feelings without exploring their deeper causes, resulting in repetitive conversations with little measurable progress. Despite the organization's mission to foster trust, neutrality, and growth through structured, evidence-based practices, the sessions lacked consistency, continuity, and professional follow-up.
More concerning was the gradual loss of neutrality and objectivity, as discussions centered disproportionately on my behavior while my spouse's concerns and contributions were seldom addressed. The absence of a balanced approach, consistent note-taking, and root-cause analysis contradicted the organization's stated commitment to fairness, evidence-based practice, and comprehensive relationship support. Additionally, the lack of integration of faith--a value I specifically requested--further distanced the sessions from the shared spiritual foundation my wife and I hoped to preserve.
While I appreciate the Theresa's time and initial efforts, I cannot overlook that the process, as delivered, conflicted with the organization's vision of guiding couples toward mutual growth, respect, and restoration while leaving my marriage in a lesser place than when we first started. My hope is that this feedback encourages reflection and improvement in structure, neutrality, and faith-based alignment so that future clients experience the balanced, healing environment this organization aspires to provide.
