John Paul Jones Memorial

Great memorial, but the walkway was closed so we couldn’t get close.

The John Paul Jones Memorial in Washington, D.C., honors the most famous naval hero of the American Revolution, often called the "Father of the U.S. Navy." Located near the Tidal Basin at 17th Street and Independence Avenue SW, the bronze statue stands before a marble pylon and was dedicated in 1912. The memorial commemorates Jones's daring raids on British shipping and, most famously, his victory over the superior British frigate HMS Serapis. The back of the pylon is inscribed with his legendary reply to the British demand for surrender: "Surrender? I Have Not Yet Begun to Fight!" The monument also features dolphin heads spouting water into basins and a bas-relief showing Jones raising the American flag, which he was the first to fly on an American warship. His remains were brought back from Paris in 1905 and are interred at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

This is a very nice monument to the Father of the US Navy. It's located to the left of the WWII Memorial if you're walking from the Washington Monument. It's located in a little triangle near the backside of the Tidal Pool.

This is the statue of John Paul Jones, who is a revolutionary war naval hero. He was a Scottish-born sailor, famed for his capture of the British HMS Serapis during the Revolutionary War. A very famous phrase of his is “I have not yet begun to fight!". This memorial is very close to the World War II memorial - just need to cross the street to get here. This place is accessible 24 hours.

John Paul Jones was a very interesting lad from Scotland who helped to secure America’s independence from his United Kingdom. It is very doubtful that America would exist as such without his help, but nevertheless took until 1912 to erect a monument for him. This one is a pretty simple one when compared to others on the Mall, but the statue, relief, and quotes are awesome. Very much worth a visit whilst on the Mall.
