Kahlil Gibran Memorial Garden (Washington, D.C.)

These sculptures are of Khalil Gibran sculpted to appear as part of a tree in the woods by Gordon S. Kray. Kahlil Gibran was a poet and philosopher born in 1883 in a village of Besharri of Lebanon who was very much loved and inspired by his mother. He emigrated to Boston at young age and began his career as artist and author. His books contain his mystical paintings and wrote both in Arabic and English and his books are translated in many languages and circulated widely. He passed away in New York City in 1931. This memorial was designed by architect Hellmuth Obata and Kassabaum and was dedicated to the people of the United States by Kahlil Gibran Centennial Foundation in 1991. Those who know Kahlil Gibran through his literature, are reminisced by being at this site.

I haven't visited for a long while, but what a disappointing change. It seems no one cares for the site now. In addition to the trash, the grounds weren't trimmed and the fountain wasn't working (though that could be a cold weather preparation). I'm always surprised that there isn't a cedar tree or two planted at the memorial. Anyway, sigh...

This is such a great memorial for Kahlil Gibran. If you are going on a walk down embassy row be sure to check this garden out! The flowers and plants are gorgeous and in the summer it has a fountain! Super peaceful, would be a great spot to read.

I unexpectedly came across this memorial as I took my daily walks downtown 2 the YMCA from Tenleytown.

The memorial is tasteful, private, understated, and quiet. A nice place to read a chapter of your book.
