Oct 16th 2025, our lives changed forever. My granddaughter 19 months old, was bounced around the state until she was life-flighted to luries with her heart and lungs giving out. My husband and I drove up to Chicago the night she made it there, my son, his gf and my mom where already there waiting for us.
She pulled through after being shocked before leaving Peoria, then rushed I to emergency heart surgery to fix what they found on an MRI. That night my husband and I took our son to shamburg so he could sleep where we had a room booked. The next morning we get back to luries and the hospital staff contacted the social worker there, and she was able to get a room at the Ronald McDonald house Chicago, for our son, his gf and my mom. So they would be able to be at the hospital a lot quicker than we could provide.
They took such great care of the kids ( my son is 20 and his gf 18). And when our granddaughter had healed from the multiple surgeries to bypass and create veins in her heart which she was born without, and to get the first two adjustments done on her stints in her heart and lungs.
Now she is at rmh with them, in the almost home kids program. Where she can see all her therapists and get aqauinted with her new found energy and ability to do things she couldn't before.
And as for our son and his gf? They have been provided meals, laundry services, snacks and hot beverages, shuttle rides and much more while they have been there. I personally just came home from visiting there and bringing items home so it's not so overwhelming in a few weeks when she's released.
And while I was there, I noticed very clean floors, the entrance was well lit and there was always someone at the front desk. You need a "key" to access building, and utilize elevator ( depending on what color wrist band, depends on what floors are accessible to you. I really found that impressive). There are areas for families to relax and watch TV or look out the window and watch the snow fall like I did.
There is an entire kitchen available, they provide three meals a day and had a well stocked " family fridge" where they kept leftovers and milk, and other easy grab and go items.
The only "dirty areas" I even encountered honestly was the alleyways. But that is to be expected when you are surrounding by restaurants. Dont picture like gross dirty, but like it's an alley, it's not going to sparkle. The only vagrants we saw while out there were two pigeons and I think a barn sparrow or something similar. So, there were no unhoused people lingering in the alleyway, I think we saw literally one person walk through, and that was at the end of his shift at the Italian place.
So long story short, Ronald McDonald house, I could go on forever praising you. But I think enough folks know that, you help any and all who need it, and you provide so much more than a place to sleep. You have great staff,( the ones I had the pleasure of meeting were very nice). The shuttle driver Mark, he has a heart of gold, He and his wife are angels in disguise. And if it wasn't for your help, I know It would be so much more stress and strain on the kids going back and forth.
So, thank you. Thank you and all the staff, for everything. I know I appreciate it greatly.
